Dear Friends and Supporters,
During this world wide pandemic it is important to see the seriousness and danger, but also to recognize the hope and inspiration which exists within these troubled times. I SIHG is a beacon of hope and inspiration at any time and I hope this short update finds you safe and healthy. Becky sent a short update on the state of SIHG which I have included below.
“We are bringing all kids home that have been boarding and isolating them in tents.
We see a movement albeit small in the big picture to take this seriously around us. It is our take to be careful now. We have stocked on foods and supplies and will continue. Linda is doing what she can to instill that this is not a HOAX which is thought by many here.
Linda and I both had trips planned, which we will have to postpone, her a wedding and me a much-needed release and quiet. We are both trying to emotionally remain calm and united in goals.
The baby is staying with Linda and myself as he is still battling little struggles and not strong enough to be incorporated to the main group.”
Shortly after we received Becky’s update Linda sent us an update detailing that SIHG. has been advised by the government to shelter in place. All of the 31 children under SIHG’s care are now living at SIHG. Twelve employees have agreed to move in and live on site to help care for the kids during this time. SIHG has reacted quickly and is as prepared as they can be. We are blessed to have workers who are willing to separate from their own families during this time to care for the kids.
Reading Becky and Linda’s short notes, it becomes evident how far and wide this virus’ reach is. It also is a great reminder of how blessed we are to have those who are caring for others. How fortunate our children are at SIHG to have such forward thinking and selfless leaders there to care for them. In times like these it is tempting to focus on ourselves as things we are accustomed to are stripped away. May I suggest we look outside ourselves and seek for ways to help those around us.
John the Baptist when asked how to prepare for the coming of the messiah gave the most practical of commands which I will paraphrase as, “Share what you have.”
Luke 3:11 “John answered, ‘Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same’.”
There will be lots of people who need aid, now and in the near future. I implore you to look for ways to help where you can. Let us also find ways to show gratitude towards those who are working and putting themselves at risk to fight this virus.
Lastly, on a very practical note, SIHG is aware that the recent financial turmoil may be greatly affecting many of our donors. The good news is that through your past generosity and the stewardship of SIHG in Kenya we are prepared to work through this tragedy. We anticipate the coming months to more expensive as prices on certain staples may rise and staff will need to be provided room and board. Because of this the SIHG board voted to send an additional $11,000 (one month’s operating budget) to SIHG for the second quarter to help with these added costs. We are aware of and planning for more funds to be needed until things start to return to normal.
When I write that I am grateful for every penny donated, I mean it with the utmost sincerity. I need to praise and acknowledge the wonderful and generous community that is SIHG and ask you continue to be generous to ensure the children entrusted to us are cared for and loved. SIHG will continue to value and maximize every donation for the benefit of the children in Kenya and has faith that together we will weather this storm.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Baloian
