Our History

Seeds In His Garden was founded in 1998 by Rebecca Adams, a woman from California, U.S.A.

When Becky arrived in Kenya in 1997, her intention was to stay one month. She volunteered with children and stayed in a tent in a slum located in the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. Although she accomplished numerous things that month including arranging activities and helping the people develop and plan for the future, it was clear to her that there was a much greater need.

Becky began preparing for her departure from Kenya, but her heart and soul were broken. She was left with an unanswered question of responsibility. As she lay with tears one night, her spirit heavy, her inner voice kept repeating,

“Who will care, love, and commit to these children after you are gone?”

The Start of S.I.H.G

Unable to answer the question, she felt that the only thing she could do was return to Kenya and accept the responsibility herself. Becky left Kenya knowing that when she returned home she would have to sell her possessions including her beloved horse to start the program, prepare her family, and say farewell to friends and all the comforts of home. Six months later she returned to Kenya and developed what is now known as Seeds in His Garden Children’s Home.

Early Years

The first year was a challenge, and Becky says her faith in God is what drives her and kept her strong amidst difficult times. Becky got cerebral malaria within weeks of arriving back to Kenya. Soon after she was cleared to return to work, a bomb was set off in the U.S. Embassy. Once again Becky felt called to serve, and she volunteered and assisted with relief effort at the site. Difficulties mounted, getting crucial supplies for SIHG imported was a challenge as Becky faced legal issues and bribery. Then Becky suffered from a serious car accident that caused several broken bones and severed her ear. None of this stopped Becky from believing in her mission to provide exceptional care, love and education to the forgotten and abandoned children brought to her home.

Middle Years

As Seeds In His Garden became established and more stable, a great need for volunteers arose. Linda Van Dalen, Holland native, and recent graduate with a degree in accounting, discovered SIHG and volunteered. Over 6 years she continued to volunteer with her stays becoming longer and longer until she eventually left her job, her family, and her home country to come and work alongside Becky at SIHG.

Becky and Linda faced the daily challenges of running a home with up to 30 children, all damaged and at different places in their recovery. But other challenges arose, like finding adequate housing. Multiple times the home had to move when a lease wasn’t renewed or housing didn’t meet the high standards held. Becky dreamed of having their own place, and was able to purchase a small piece of land in Kitengela, a small city south of Nairobi. The farm in Kitengela proved a challenge. The first major building project went bad when construction had to be stopped midway because of shortcuts and mistakes made by the contractor. With funds tied up in the failed construction, the move to the farm was put on indefinite hold.

Recent Years

Recently things have begun to change. In 2014 Seeds In His Garden officially moved to the farm. In the preceding years, Seeds In His Garden courageously moved forward thanks to some generous donors, two large fundraisers in 2008 and 2013 and the tireless work and planning by Becky and Linda. Presently, SIHG is located on the farm where 3 new housing units, office space, and a kitchen have been built. In addition, a working farm has been developed on the property where SIHG is able to grow its own fruits and vegetables, as well as raising goats and other livestock.

The Future

A 4th housing unit and eventually a school are all in the plans.
